August Retiree Report

UAW  On August 4, our UAW Retiree's meeting was called to order at 12:00 noon by Chairman Ted Fleming, with 195 retirees and guests in attendance. A motion to accept the proposed agenda was made by Kathy Masterson and seconded by Lydia Fleming.

Vice Chair Orville Clark led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation was led by Norma English. A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members.

Thank you to our nurses who thoughtfully do blood pressure screenings monthly. We appreciate our faithful kitchen staff who make our monthly luncheons possible, including Frank Saman, Eulala VanDyke, Mary Barns, Joanne Henry, Aurelia and Tom Tovar, and Ray Burzyck. For our September 1 meeting, we have Ray Burzyck and Dick and Shirley Cass signed up. If anyone else would like to help them out for this luncheon, just come early (around 9:00 a.m.), and we'll appreciate your help. We still have openings on our kitchen schedule for the October meeting so see if it fits into your schedule and at the upcoming meeting we will write you in.

Birthdays were recognized. We had birthdays in the range of age 60 and all the way to age 92. Wedding anniversaries ranged from 51 years of wedded bliss to one couple who admitted to 71 years. The gentleman when asked the secret to 71 years of wedded bliss said, "Live right and always say yes dear"! It's wonderful to see so many of our former co-workers enjoying these retirement years.

President Keith Boecker reported three retirements on July 1 from the GM Unit. Congratulations to newly retired Daniel Brewer, Dan Hoellrich, and "Rocky" Michael Rittenour. Retiring on August 1 were Joseph Hoshock, Jeffrey Kosch, Christian Stuckey, and
Greggory Vasicek. Congratulations to all!

Dan Perez, UAW/GM Alternate Benefits Representative, was "enticed" to address us. He spoke of the importance of always bringing your EOB (Explanation of Benefits) statements when you meet with any of the benefit representatives for assistance. They are better able to assist you with any benefit problems when they have these documents that are a wealth of information, such as your deductible status. Dan reminded us again that representatives from the "Trust" will be here for our September meeting, and they will answer any question you may have about your benefits.

Board members will attend the Ohio Alliance of Retired Workers in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday, September 13. They will return with information relating to our Social Security benefits. Its mission is "Respect and Protect Retirement Security".

We learned that UAW Local 9, Honeywell, in South Bend, Indiana, had workers who were locked out over health care issues and subcontracting issues when workers were given a letter on subcontracting that could result in loss of some jobs. “It's not an actual strike, it's a
lockout. We didn't walk off the jobs, we didn't create the work stoppage. They actually came to us and walked us out. Our guys were willing to continue working through the process,” UAW Local 9 president Adam Stevenson said. A motion was made and carried to authorize a
donation of $500 to assist these locked out workers.

Ted told us that some couples from Local 211 recently enjoyed time at Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center learning about their union while also enjoying the numerous amenities the center and Black Lake have to offer. Hopefully, more members will look into visiting and learning at the center in the future. It is a very unique experience.

Mark your calendars. The annual Region 2-B UAW Entertainment Outing is scheduled for September 24 at the Tam-O-Shanter on 7060 Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania, Ohio. Happenings include entertainment, raffle drawings and servings of Bar-B-Q chicken and ribs, hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn, and beverages. Our local has ordered 20 tickets (normally cost $45.00 each). These tickets are available free of charge to lucky lottery winners who sign up at our September meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at our September meeting! Food is served at 10:30 a.m., and our meeting starts at 12:00 noon.
